What is the importance of your faith at Redeemer's Garden? Our faith story is a journey. Both Willie and I have been believers in the Lord Jesus for a long time. We believe that Jesus has provided the only way to fully experience life. He has shown us how to live a life free from sin and how to connect with our Father God. If you are interested, we are happy to share in more detail.
Why consider purchasing Cashmere Goats? Cashmere goats are lovable and useful. They have great personality and can make great pets. They are also useful for their fiber production, land clearing ability, and meat.
"I've heard that cashmere is very challenging to spin" This is a myth. Although cashmere has a much shorter staple length than wool and most other fibers, because of the high crimp, it spins very nicely.
Are you part of any associations? Yes. I am a member of the Canadian Cashmere Producers Association and serve as a director. I am also a member of the Chilliwack Spinners and Weavers Guild.
Are your cashmere goats registered? No. It is not yet possible to register cashmere goats. However, the Canadian Cashmere Association has recently submitted a breed standard for accreditation. You can find more information on breed standards at http://www.cashmerecanada.ca/breed-standards.html See also other pages of the Canadian Cashmere Association http://www.cashmerecanada.ca/index.html
What are heirloom veggies and fruits? As many people know, there is growing concern about what is happening to our food. Many food products have been genetically altered and hybridized. This is solely for the farmers and producers benefit. This has been done to produce food that is uniform in shape, color, size and which is easy to produce, store, transport etc. These factors often over-ride taste, texture, beauty and regional selection. As a result, many varieties that were superior in flavor and other characteristics are being lost. It also causes loss of genetic diversity. When diversity is lost, the ability for replacement in the event of a disaster disappears as well.
For thousands of years, small farmers and gardeners have saved seeds. They have selected seeds based on flavor, texture, beauty and what grows well in their area. These are the seeds we call heirloom seeds. Science has found that many of these varieties have superior nutrition when grown organically, than those that are mass produced. Here at Redeemer's Garden we grow as many heirloom type veggies as possible. We grow with natural fertilizer (manure) and no pesticides. Many of our veggies come in vibrant colors that are not found in regular grocery stores. Their flavor is outstanding.
